Increase in KLIA 2 cost due to project size revision

THE cost of the KL International Airport 2 (KLIA 2) doubled from RM2bil to RM4bil due to the revision of the project size, the House heard.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said that the revision was done to accommodate the growing number of passengers.

“The Government carried out infrastructure revision to ensure that we will not face any problems in the future. We plan the project not only for today, but also for the future,” he told Tony Pua (DAP-Petaling Jaya Utara).

Pua had asked the ministry to reveal the current cost and the estimated date of completion for the new low-cost airport terminal in Sepang.

Abdul Rahim also noted that after a few discussions with airline companies, Malaysia Airports Bhd decided to increase the size of the project.

They need to fulfil certain aspects for the project such as the regulatory needs like improving the security system so it would be able to accommodate an annual capacity to handle 45 million passengers, he said.

As at Sept 13, the construction is ahead of schedule by 61.92% and was expected to be completed by 2013 based on the commitment given by the contractors, said Abdul Rahim.

The estimated cost for the project is about RM4bil based on the scope given by the contractors, he added.
