AN Independent MP has alleged that a local law firm is conspiring with Suaram by providing false information to a French lawyer in a bid to topple the Federal Government.

Wee Choo Keong (IND – Wangsa Maju) said a famous law firm, which had received contracts from government-linked companies, had attempted to fool international authorities by claiming in a letter that Suaram was a legal entity and a registered body.

“Suaram is not a registered body with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and yet, the law firm had sent a letter to a French lawyer claiming that it is a registered body through Suara Inisiatif Sdn Bhd.

“This is a ‘grand design’ to discredit the Government. At the same time, Suaram received foreign funding. It shows that they have a bad intention,” he said during debate on the Budget at committee stage.

In his reply, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said investigation papers had been submitted to the Attorney-General’s Office.

Despite Suara Inisiatif’s claim in its Memorandum of Articles of Associations that it carried out trading and other businesses, only 0.06% of its revenue was generated from such activities, he said.

“I did not say that it is wrong that a small percentage of their revenue is generated from trading but this can be seen as suspicious. Clearly, the company is not doing what it is supposed to do,” said Ismail Sabri.

Datuk Mohamad Aziz (BN – Sri Gading) then interjected, accusing the company of acting as a “mask” to receive foreign funding to carry out illegal activities. His remark prompted a chaotic verbal fight among lawmakers.
