P. Ramlee unites House

MUSIC brings people together, even opposing sides in the august House.

When Datuk Mohamad Aziz (BN – Sri Gading) suggested that the legendary Tan Sri P. Ramlee be given a posthumous “Tun” title, DAP MP Jeff Ooi stood up and voiced his support for the idea.

“His songs are evergreen,” Mohamad said during the debate on Budget 2013 on allocations for the Information, Communications and Culture Ministry.

At this juncture, Ooi said: “As a Malaysian, I believe that P. Ramlee’s contributions cannot be replaced.

“I still remember the time when I was working in Kuala Lumpur and it was Hari Raya, I heard Dendang Perantau, one of P. Ramlee’s songs, over the radio. I was holding my bus ticket to go back home and tears flowed from my eyes.”

“P. Ramlee’s songs cut across races. So whatever that was proposed by you (Mohamad and Pasir Mas MP Datuk Ibrahim Ali, who also supported the move), I agree 100%,” said Ooi.

At one point, Ibrahim spoke about another P. Ramlee hit, Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti, prompting Mohamad to sing a line from the song in the Dewan.

On a separate issue, Salahuddin Ayub (PAS – Kubang Kerian) questioned the bahasa rojak used in local films.

“This is very embarrassing. Due attention should be given to this. We should heed countries like South Korea and Japan, which still uphold good manners and decency in their culture,” he said.
