Mahmud Abu Bekir spent over RM780,000 in seven months, court hears

KUALA LUMPUR: A Maybank customer service division manager confirmed that Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir had spent more than RM780,000 via American Express platinum charge card between last December and June this year.
Musinah Manap, 47, who was attached to Maybank in Jalan Tun Perak here testified in a Syariah High Court that the amount was from the charge card statement of account dated between January 8 and June 8, this year.
She said the statements were posted to Mahmud, 49, at Titanium Tower in Brighton Square, Jalan Song in Kuching, Sarawak, and he had never disputed the amount spent.
"The statements between January and June revealed that Mahmud spent RM166,332, RM148,763, RM102,236, RM172,193, RM39,454 and RM153,539 each.
"Based on the statements, he spent RM129,660 at Reliance Shipping and Travel on Dec 22, RM6,175.73 at Ferrari Store in London on Jan 6, RM117,919 at Harrods department store in London on Jan 17 and RM4,747 at Hilton Singapore on May 14," she said.
She was replying to a question by plaintiff Shahnaz A. Majid's counsel, Dr Rafie Shafie, during an examination-in-chief on Monday.
Musinah was called to give her testimony to confirm Mahmud's statement of accounts in the trial of Mahmud's ex-wife Shahnaz, who is jazz singer Datuk Sheila Majid's sister, to get RM300mil in matrimonial property and RM100mil in gifts (mutaah) as a divorce settlement.
To another question posed by Dr Rafie, she said the charge card had no limit and if Mahmud chose to spend RM1mil, he could do so.
Musinah added that she had the authority to confirm the statement of accounts on behalf of Maybank.
Shahnaz, 48, is also claiming 50% of all assets owned by Mahmud, who is Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud's son.
These include luxury cars, houses in various locations, land in Sarawak and shares.
The couple were married on Jan 9, 1992 and divorced on May 11 last year. They have a son, who was born in 1993.
The hearing before Syarie judge Muhamad Abdullah continues on Dec 24 where the witness will be cross-examined by defendant's counsel.
