Parliament rules to be amended to bar MPs from making sexist remarks

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of Parliament will be specifically barred from making sexist remarks under proposed amendments to Dewan Rakyat rules that was tabled Monday.
The amendment to Standing Order 36 paragraph four now reads 'It shall be out of order for Members of the House to use offensive language or make a sexist remark'.
Members of Parliament have landed in hot soup in the past when uttering sexist remarks against their fellow MPs during heated exchanges in the House.
Although they can be reprimanded by the Speaker and referred to the Rights and Privileges Committee, there is no specific provision in the Standing Order to prevent them from doing so.
One of the most controversial sexist remarks uttered was in May 1997 when Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin landed in trouble over a 'bocor' remark, in apparent reference to Batu Gajah MP Fong Po Kuan's monthly menstruation cycle during an argument over the Parliament's ceiling that was leaking at that time.
