GEORGE TOWN: An avid angler drowned while his boat’s skipper managed to swim to safety after their fishing boat capsized.
Ng Chin Lee, 53, was trapped inside the cabin of the boat when it capsized after being hit by a ferry at 3am yesterday, four nautical miles off Pulau Kendi.
It is learnt that both Ng, a store executive, and skipper Loh Tek Yong, in his 50s, had gone out on a fishing trip at about 4pm on Saturday.
They had anchored their boat in the middle of the sea.
Loh managed to swim to safety after the boat capsized.
He then waited for more than seven hours on top of the capsized vessel before a fisherman’s boat passed by and alerted the authorities.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) towed the boat to the Pen-Marine Yacht Centre in Batu Maung at about 3pm yesterday.
Ng’s family members said he was an avid angler and went on fishing trips almost every weekend.
“This was one of his many hobbies,” said his sister, who declined to be named.
Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Mohd Hatta Mohd Zain said the case had been temporarily classified as sudden death.
