Selangor says will drape AES cameras with red cloth

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government will not dismantle the two Automatic Enforcement System (AES) cameras in the state but will instead to cover them with red cloth.
State exco member Ronnie Liu said he preferred turning off the cameras as well as dismantling them altogether, but Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had decided that the best course of action would be draping cloth over the cameras.
"We will test with the red cloth first.
"We want to see who dares to remove the cloth," he told pressmen after attending a talk by former Indonesian president B.J. Habibie at Universiti Selangor (UniSel) here Thursday.
Liu added that the state government would begin draping the cameras Thursday, after receiving no feedback from the Transport Ministry regarding the usage of the cameras.
Asked about the Road Transport Department's decision to allow those caught on camera to pay the fine in six months instead of 60 days, Liu said the decision could be due to growing protest from the public.
The cameras are currently installed at KM6.6 of the South Klang Valley Expressway and KM301.6 of the North-South Highway.
The Selangor government has reportedly been adamant against the installation of the AES cameras, insisting the system infringed on the rights of the motorists.
"If installed in accident hotspots, then we don't mind.
"It is not fair when such cameras are installed in places with no proper signs warning motorists," Liu alleged.
