Court order obtained but too late to stop Saudi journalist's deportation

KUALA LUMPUR: A High Court judge here Sunday granted an interim order to lawyers representing Saudi journalist Mohammad Najeeb A. Kashgari, also known as Hamza Kashgari, to bar his deportation by Malaysian authorities, according to news reports.

However, it was too late for the 23-year-old Kashgari, who was detained at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport last Thursday at the request of the Saudi Arabian authorities.

Kashgari was deported earlier Sunday, a police spokesman said.

He was handed over to Saudi officials and flown back Sunday morning.

Flights arrangements were handled by the Saudi authorities, the spokesman said.
