Student roadshow disrupted by thugs

By TEH ENG HOCK

KLANG: Several undergraduates on a roadshow campaigning for student freedom were allegedly attacked by thugs at a talk in Kampung Idaman here Saturday.

According to Independent Students Action coordinator Ehsan Bukharee, a group of 20 men arrived at the community hall and started to intimidate those present by throwing chairs and yelling at them.

The talk was part of a nationwide roadshow organised by Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (Malaysia Students Solidarity).

Speakers and cameras were also dismantled by the group, which had grown larger by then, said Ehsan in a video statement, which was broadcast on YouTube.

Photos and videos of the damage were posted online by various blogs.

"The police arrived at about 9pm and asked us to cancel our talk. We obliged and went to the Pandamaran police station to make a report," he said.

But he claimed the thugs followed the group to the police station and continued to intimidate them.

After lodging the report, the undergraduates proceeded to the South Klang district police headquarters under police escort but the thugs continued harassing them.

"Stones were thrown at us, and they were slamming their fist on our car," he said, adding that the car belonging to Independent Student Activist Group deputy president Khalid Ismath was dented as a result.

Student activist Adam Adli, in a tweet, alleged that the thugs also surrounded the South Klang district police headquarters.

South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Mat Yusop confirmed police received two reports on the incident.

Investigations were almost complete, he added, with five people called up for questioning and released on bail earlier Sunday.

He refuted allegations that the police district headquarters was surrounded by thugs, saying they were called up for the identification parade.

"We called up 40 people, and they waited outside the station," he said.
