PETALING JAYA: Saudi Arabian newspaper columnist Mohammad Najeeb A. Kashgari, who allegedly posted several tweets that insulted Islam, has been deported to his country, where he could be executed for the offence.

Federal police assistant director of management (public relations) ACP Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said Kashgari, who is also known as Hamza Kashgari, was deported Sunday morning.

"Saudi Arabian police arrived in Malaysia and took him away after the local police handed him over," he said when contacted.

Meanwhile, a lawyer for Kashgari claimed the deportation was in "contempt of court" as her team had obtained a court order preventing local authorities from deporting him.

"We obtained the order from High Court judge Justice Rohana Yusof at her house at 1.30pm," said Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, one of Kashgari's lawyers.

She claimed the team was informed by police officers in Bukit Aman that Kashgari was still in the country in the afternoon.

"When we tried to serve the order at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), an immigration officer there confirmed that Kashgari had been deported.

"This is in contempt of court and a violation of human rights," Fadiah Nadwa said.

She claimed Kashgari had also been denied access to his lawyers since his arrest in Malaysia on Feb 9.

Kashgari, 23, was arrested at the KLIA at the request of Saudi Arabian authorities.

The columnist was said to have infuriated Saudi Arabians for posting a series of tweets on Prophet Muhammad's birthday last week.

Some clerics have called for the his death. Blasphemy is punishable by death under Saudi laws.
