PAS squads to dissuade Muslims youths from celebrating Valentine's Day

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS will continue to conduct outreach programmes to dissuade Muslim youths from celebrating Valentine's Day, which the Islamist party says is against Islamic teachings.

PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi said Monday that party officials will visit popular spots for lovebirds to persuade them to avoid behaviour that is against Islamic teachings.

"This (outreach) is not done only on Valentine's Day.

"We have also been reaching out to youths on New Year's Eve, Merdeka Day's eve, and other festivals when we think young people will spend their time loitering around or dating their partners," he said, adding that party officials would only distribute flyers or give the youths advice, and not conduct raids.

However, he stressed that the move will only target Muslims and not youths from other religions.

"Our focus is to make Muslims aware of the Islamic ways to cherish the relationship between couples who are already married," said Nasrudin.

"It was never our intention to meddle in the affairs of non-Muslims," he added.
