Dr Chua says ‘no loser or winner’ in debate with Guan Eng

By FOONG PEK YEE

KUALA LUMPUR: The debate between MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng was not a battle of wits, and there was "no loser or winner".

Dr Chua said this when asked to assess his performance and that of Guan Eng during a joint press conference with the Penang chief minister after the one-hour live telecast of their debate entitled 'Chinese at a Crossroads - Is a Two-Party System Becoming a Two-Race System?' here.

Dr Chua, 65, said he sees the people as the winners in the debate because it was aimed at giving them a clearer understanding of the Barisan Nasional and MCA relationship and that of the Pakatan Rakyat and DAP.

He also praised Guan Eng as a formidable and experienced speaker who has been debating for the last 20 years.

"He is young, energetic and knowledgeable," he said of the 52-year-old Guan Eng.

On the proposal from Lim that there should be a debate between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Dr Chua said he would convey the proposal to Najib.

To a question from the media, he said it was up to Najib and Anwar to decide whether they would have the debate.
