Agency Link Up System can address phantom voters: Hisham

KUALA LUMPUR: The Agency Link Up System (ALIS), launched last December, is capable of addressing the issue on phantom voters, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.

He said implementation of the system would also improve and update promptly all data on the electoral roll by the Election Commission (EC), in line with the suggestion made by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) for Electoral Reforms.

ALIS, besides simplifying the process of applying for burial permits and death certificates, involves sharing of information between the National Registration Department (NRD) and eight other government agencies, including the EC and the Royal Malaysian Police, he said in a statement Sunday.

Hishammuddin hoped that with the system being implemented, it would put an end to the issue on the presence of phantom voters, as claimed by certain quarters to confuse the people.

Through ALIS, a report on the death of a voter would be channeled to all the agencies which shared the information online and this would assist the EC in updating its electoral roll by removing the names of the dead voter/s, he added.

Prior to this, Hishammuddin said the EC would have to obtain the death certificates of the voters' concerned from their next-of-kin before their names could be deleted from the electoral roll.

With the implementation of ALIS, the next-of-kin of the deceased would only have to lodge a report at either the police station, hospital or with the local authorities, to obtain the burial permit and death certificate, he added. BERNAMA
