Storm leaves Kulim folk without roofs

KULIM: A freak storm lashed four areas here, damaging 57 houses with 28 having their roofs blown away.

Strong winds left a trail of destruction, including uprooted trees.

District welfare officer Rohana Yusuf said 35 of the houses are in Padang China, 16 in Keladi, five in Lunas and one in Sungai Seluang.

Welfare officers have visited the places to assess damage.

Mohd Dahar Jusoh, 40, whose house was damaged in the 6pm storm, said he and his wife, Zuaida Abdul Aziz, 38, were working at the time.

“We moved into the house a month ago after renovating it for RM60,000,” said Mohd Dahar, a teacher at a school in Kuala Ketil, Baling.

Factory worker Hafizah Md Hasan, 40, said she was walking home, carrying her 20-month-old daughter, when the storm struck.

“I nearly fell because of the strong wind. A mango tree uprooted and almost hit us,” she said. – Bernama
