Thai mum gets gallows for cocaine trafficking

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here sentenced a Thai single mother to death after she was found guilty on two counts of trafficking cocaine, in two separate incidents in 2009.

Judge Justice Su Geok Yiam made the ruling after Chaloemlak Nakkoed, 32, failed to raise reasonable doubt by the end of the defence case.

The court found her guilty on two counts of trafficking a total of 658g of cocaine.

Chaloemlak, the mother of a four-year-old boy, was charged with trafficking 454g of cocaine at Room 908, Citin Hotel, Jalan Pudu here, about 8.05pm on Sept 7, 2009.

The caddy, who worked at a golf club in Kittinakorn, Thailand, was also accused of trafficking 204g of cocaine at Kuala Lumpur Hospital between 10.20pm on Sept 8 and 2.55am the following day.

A total of 21 prosecution witnesses testified.

Deputy public prosecutor Hafiz Mohd Yusoff prosecuted while Chamloemlak was represented by lawyer T. Chakarvarthi.

According to the facts of the case, a police team raided the hotel room and found 32 capsules containing cocaine weighing 454g in Chaloemlak's bag.

Following an X-ray at the hospital, 31 capsules were found in her stomach which were duly extracted.
