KUALA LUMPUR: More motorists have accidents on the way to work than when they are returning home.

Social Security Organisation (Socso) CEO K. Selvarajah said that statistics indicated that accidents involving commuters had also risen by 3% in 2011 compared to the year before.

"Accidents involving those going to work make up 52%, while accidents involving commuters leaving their workplaces make up 48%.

This might be because people tend to rush, to avoid being late for work," he said, adding that most of the accidents involve motorcyclists.

Selvarajah also said that there was a 26.5% increase in occupational diseases in 2011 over 2010 with that sitting in an awkward position for long periods emerging as the number one occupational disease as more employees were being diagnosed with Musculo-Skeletal Disease.

The other occupational diseases were noisy work environments and too much manual lifting. As a result, employees were increasingly complaining about hearing impairment caused by noise.
