MALACCA: The International Mone-tary Fund (IMF) has commended Malaysia for its prudent economic management, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said such a recognition was welcomed because not many other nations, including countries deemed more prosperous in the region, received such accolades from an international body.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony of offer letters to potential owners of Sungai Putat affordable apartments in Batu Berendam here, Najib also refuted claims by certain quarters that the country had borrowed heavily from the World Bank and IMF to spearhead projects under the 1Malaysia banner.

“Instead, we used our domestic fiscal strength to generate revenue and subsequently channel it for development that is beneficial to the rakyat.

“As a responsible Government, we plan for our next generation, and borrowing from external sources could be detrimental to the future of our country,” he said.

Najib added that the country's financial management was on the right track and there was no need to depend on foreign bodies for aid.

“Some parties can hurl whatever accusation, but we have a track record in managing the economy well,” he said.

The Prime Minister added that the Government would continue to work hard for the nation and the rakyat.

“I am not trying to fish for votes or offer empty political promises. Rest assured that all proposed and planned projects are executed with the sincere intention of securing the future of the next generation,” he said.

Earlier, the Prime Minister handed over offer letters to potential owners of the apartments tendered out at an attractive price of RM35,000 per unit, much lower than the actual property value of RM148,000.
