Liow: Make public details of Lynas temporary operating licence

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government should make public the details of the temporary operating licence (TOL) given to Lynas Corp, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

“We hope the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) will reveal on what basis the TOL was issued to Lynas,” he told reporters after attending the MCA Kepong Chinese New Year open house here on Sunday.

The MCA deputy president, who heads a watchdog committee on the Lynas rare earth refinery, said the committee had also done research on the plant and submitted its findings to the Government.

“We urge the Government to strictly keep tabs on the refinery and do all it can to ensure public safety,” he said, adding that the Health Ministry is also monitoring the issue very closely.

Liow also said the Government and relevant agencies should do more to engage with Kuantan residents on the licence.

The AELB had on Wednesday issued the TOL to the RM700mil Lynas Advanced Materials Plant in Gebeng, a 30-minute drive from the state capital of Kuantan.

The board's director-general Raja Datuk Abdul Aziz Raja Adnan had said Lynas Corp's application was approved with several conditions.

“If any of them are broken, the licence can be suspended or withdrawn, and further applications will not be considered,” he was quoted as saying.

The Stop Lynas Coalition criticised the decision as it claimed the issue of a permanent disposal facility for the radioactive waste has yet to be resolved.
