Swift action by assistant engineer saves students

KLANG: Swift action by an assistant engineer in informing the Fire and Rescue Department of a fire which broke out at a religious school here saved the lives of 23 students.

Sahipulbahry Sahiddin, 46, who saw thick smoke spewing from the Pusat Tahfiz Darul Mustafa religious school at Batu 7, Jalan Meru, rushed into the school and alerted the students, including his son, who were napping at about 3.54pm yesterday.

Two fire engines from the Sungai Pinang and Kota Raja fire stations rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call and managed to control the blaze within 30 minutes.

“When I arrived at the school, all the students were fast asleep. The fire started from a room at the back of the school.

“I immediately woke them up and told them to run out of the building before calling the fire station,” he said yesterday.

The school, a converted single storey house, was established as a full-time religious school in 2010 and accepted students between the ages of 11 and 17.

House owner Mohd Salehhodin Sabiyee, 49, said most of the residents in the area were at a wedding reception nearby.

“The fire spread so fast, leaving the students no chance to salvage any belongings,” he said. — Bernama
