Thaipusam devotees smash coconuts along Jalan Datuk Keramat, Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Thousands of devotees gathered along Jalan Datuk Keramat to smash coconuts during the annual Thaipusam celebration.

Watched by tourists, the devotees offered flowers, perfumed joss sticks, fruits and other items to Lord Muruga as a silver chariot inched its way along the crowded street.

Earlier, the 117-year-old silver chariot left the Kovil Veedu (temple house) in Queen Street at about 6.40am to make its way to the Nattukotai Chettiar Temple on Waterfall Road.

There were hundreds of thaneer panthal (refreshment stalls) long the chariot's route offering free refreshments to devotees.
