PETALING JAYA: Despite being miles apart, some lovebirds in long-distance relationships are determined not to allow the geographical space between them get in the way of showering each other with romantic gestures on Valentine's Day.

Tee Shern Ren, 25, whose girlfriend is studying in Prague in the Czech Republic, said that for Valentine's Day last year, he ordered flowers online to be sent to her and arranged a “dinner date” over Skype.

“She deserves the best and her being overseas just means I'll have to send her my love in a different way,” said the college lecturer, who has been in a long-distance relationship for almost three years.

Closer with technology: Wong talking to her boyfriend Dennis Cheang who lives in New Zealand via Skype.

He added that this year, he would be making her a card and sending it to her via snail mail.

Raiden Yen, who considers himself a “hopeless romantic”, said he plans to send a Valentine's Day “care box” to his girlfriend, who is working in the United States.

“I'll put together some of her favourite things and other stuff that remind her of us in a box, and send it over by mail.

“I'll also send her some romantic poems through e-mail and we will both dress up for our Skype date on that day,” the 26-year-old real estate agent said, adding that it was his first time celebrating Valentine's Day away from his girlfriend.

Wong Sook Ping said it was important for her and her boyfriend in New Zealand, to go the extra mile during special occasions, such as Valentine's Day and birthdays, because it helps “bridge the gap” between them.

“It's hard enough being so far apart. In a way, celebrating special days like this together adds fuel' to our relationship and keeps us going, because it helps us appreciate each other more,” said the 26-year-old management trainee at a cosmetic products company.
