Asthma a burden, but the kavadi isn’t

BATU CAVES: The weight of the kavadi that P. Murugan (pic) carried for Thaipusam is no match to the burden on his shoulders since childhood.

“I have been battling severe asthma since I was two,” said the 30- year-old.

“I have been carrying kavadi every year since I was five and although my con dition hasn't improved greatly, I have not lost my faith,'' he said after reaching the peak of the Sri Subramaniar temple in the blazing afternoon heat.

Despite being unwell, Murugan carried the 50kg kavadi with 15 piercings hooked on his back and front, with a skewer on his tongue.

He even refused help from his father and nephew who were carrying paal kodam (milk offerings).

Murugan's kavadi was also adorned with 500 colourful peacock feathers and a Lord Muruga statue.

Amid shouts of Vel! Vel!, Murugan's journey drew the attention of foreign tourists who offered him a helping hand as he stumbled up the final steps.

Once he reached the top, his piercings were removed, and he said: “I'll be back next year.”
