KOTA KINABALU: Two thieves who broke into a bank here and ransacked three floors of the building escaped with only RM20 in loose change.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings showed the men rummaging through the staff drawers at Asia City here on Monday.

They had broken a padlock at the back to gain entry and decided to flee after the alarm was trig- gered at 8pm.

Policemen in a patrol car came by but did not find anything suspicious and the bank staff only discovered the robbery yesterday.

Bank manager Maturin Sipi said only RM20 in coins were missing, adding that they were still checking to see if any documents were missing.

Kota Kinabalu Traffic and Public Order chief Deputy Supt Peter Anak Umbuas said two suspects had been arrested in connection with the case.

In Padang Serai, a cellphone shop owner and his father forced four robbers to flee empty-handed when they put up a fight.

Kulim police chief Supt Ghuzlan Salleh said the 29-year-old shopkeeper was closing his shop at about 8pm when two men, brandishing machetes, rushed inside and demanded cash and cell-phones.

He was slashed on the head and forearm when he put up a fight.

“The 60-year-old father, who was in another room, rushed to his son's aid when he heard him screaming. He then seized a machete from one of the robbers.

“Two more robbers who were outside rushed in after hearing the commotion. But all four fled empty-handed,” Supt Ghuzlan added.

He said police found two machetes at the shop entrance.

Supt Ghuzlan said the shopkeeper was given outpatient treatment at the Kulim Hospital, adding that police were identifying the sus- pects from a CCTV recording from the shop.
