EC mum on possible election date

By MARTIN CARVALHO

PETALING JAYA: Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof Abdul Aziz has refused to comment on a speculative report in a Malay daily Wednesday, quoting him as indicating that the next polls would be held between May and June, following an imminent announcement of Parliament's dissolution.

"I have no comment on the election being in May this year.

"It could be held at any time before or latest by June 2013," he said when contacted Wednesday.

Abdul Aziz was quoted in the report as saying that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was unlikely to to dissolve Parliament, which sits in early March, so as to allow the Parliamentary Select Committee on Electoral Reforms to present their recommedations to the House.

Recommendations by the committee would likely be implemented by the EC as early as April.

Speculation over the timing of polls has been rife since late last year, with political pundits initially tagging November 2011 as a possible date although Barisan Nasional has till June 2013.

However, November passed, and the next date speculated was March, and later, May or June this year.

In a recent interview, Najib, who is Barisan chairman, said he would not call a general election until he had delivered on his promise to introduce reforms.
