Cops questioning four over brutal murder of three family members


KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested four more suspects in connection with the Jan 22 brutal murder of three family members in Semporna district.

Sabah police commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said police tracked down the suspects aged between 17 and 40 at an oil palm plantation in Tawau, about 100km from Semporna.

He said police also recovered a samurai sword, three parang and a gunnysack with a spear used for plucking oil palm fruit.

Speaking to reporters after the monthly gathering at the Kepayan state police headquarters here, Hamza said that police arrested three suspects just after the inci- dent.

A group of at least 11 people attacked a family killing Ismail Jaafar, 50, his wife Salmiah Iran, 46, and Ismail's father identified only as Jaafar, 70, while they were resting in Kalumpang, about 20km from Semporna town.

The couple's three children and two other relatives escaped unhurt.

A fourth person believed to be one of the assailants and identified as Jul Mohd Nan, 37, was killed during the attack believed to have been triggered by unsettled debts.
