1Care plan not a blueprint Report was only a suggestion, says Liow
HEALTH Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai hit out at the Opposition for misleading the public by claiming the 1Care for 1Malaysia concept paper was the blueprint of the country’s new healthcare system.
“I would like to stress the report is not the blueprint. It is only our suggestion on how to improve our current healthcare system.
“All the allegations by certain groups are lies and let me remind everyone to not twist facts just to gain political mileage,” he said in response to a question by Dr Lee Boon Chye (PKR-Gopeng).
Dr Lee had asked the Government to clarify an August 2009 report by the Health Ministry to the National Economic Council on the proposed 1Care for 1Malaysia plan.
Liow clarified the report was just a concept paper to the council asking for permission to carry out a full review of the healthcare system.
Asked if the new system would include privatisation of public hospitals, Liow said that if a national financing authority was established, a non-profit body under the supervision of the ministry would monitor it.
“The Government has not made any final decision on the blueprint of the scheme but we promise that the public and relevant stakeholders will be consulted,” he told Sim Tong Him (DAP-Kota Melaka).
On the steps taken to limit the influx of fake drugs, Liow said his ministry was looking at reviewing the Pharmacy Act to increase the penalty for selling such medicines.
“However, we are suggesting a tougher sentence to deter people from selling counterfeit drugs,” he told Datuk Mohamed Aziz (BN-Sri Gading).
At a press conference, Liow said the ministry would gather feedback on the proposed healthcare system from the public through a roadshow starting this month until end of the year.
Liow said the ministry wanted to inform the public that the Government wanted to see the country’s healthcare becoming more comprehensive, equitable and accessible by 2020.
