MCA slams Guan Eng for allegedly uttering threat
PETALING JAYA: Penang MCA state secretary Lau Chiek Tuan has criticised Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who allegedly threatened to stop allocations for schools which subscribe to two Malay language newspapers.
“Education funding should be delivered in a fair and impartial manner and should not be used as a tool for political blackmail.
“Government funding is for all. Those in power need to treat the rakyat properly. Education should not be politicised and manipulated,” said Lau in a press statement yesterday.
He added that Lim’s remarks interfered with the autonomy of the schools and contradicted freedom of expression, which the chief minister is known to advocate.
He said the topic of funding should never be used as a joke to threaten schools, hinder operations or affect students’ studies, and that Barisan National had never made such “jokes” or threats.
On April 7, it was reported in Sin Chew Daily that Lim had jokingly remarked, while addressing 84 representatives from various schools in the state, that schools in Penang should stop subscribing to Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian, otherwise the state government would stop allocating funds to them.
