Cop among nine picked up over kidnapping

SHAH ALAM: Police have remanded nine suspects, including a police Inspector, until April 7 to help facilitate investigation into the kidnapping of a businessman.

Selangor police chief DCP Datuk Tun Hisan Hamzah said three of the suspects, including the policeman, had previous criminal records.

He, however, said police were still hunting for several other suspects to help in the investigation.

“We made the arrest on Saturday, after the victim was released unharmed at 6.30am. The suspects, aged between 26 and 48, were picked up from Rawang and Kajang after that.

“Police also managed to recover RM275,000 of the RM300,000 ransom given by the victim's father,” he told reporters yesterday.

The 34-year-old victim was abducted on March 22 when he was on his way to inspect a construction site in Seri Kembangan.

His kidnappers took him to Rawang and kept him in a house there and demanded RM1.5mil ransom, which was reduced to RM300,000 after negotiations with the victim's father, who is also a business partner with his son.

DCP Tun Hisan said police confiscated three cars, a motorcycle and a trailer.

“Several other items including a machete and Touch'nGo card were also seized,” he said.

Asked about the police officer, DCP Tun Hisan said the man had been suspended from the police force in 2010 for a criminal offence.

He did not disclose what the offence was and refused to elaborate further.
