68 local food manufacturers to show calorie count on their products
By JOSEPH SIPALAN
PUTRAJAYA: The battle against the bulge is going straight to consumers, with a new push to help manage their daily calorie intake.
All 68 members of the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers' (FMM) food manufacturing group have agreed to be part of the Health Ministry's Front of Pack Labelling programme, which will show how many calories consumers take with each serving of their products.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said it was important for Malaysians to be aware of just how many calories they ingested every day, especially with rising obesity figures in the country.
Citing the National Health and Morbidity Survey, he said the prevalence of obesity nearly quadrupled over the past 15 years, growing from 4.4% in 1996 to 15.1% in 2011.
