Flowers for the FRU

KUALA LUMPUR: Anti-Lynas protesters, who marched towards Dataran Merdeka from the iconic KLCC, mostly carried stalks of flowers, passing them to bystanders along the way.

A demonstrator with a bunch of red flowers placed a stalk on the shield of each FRU personnel.

Protesters also cheered on new arrivals, waving banners and chanting pro-Bersih slogans while making space to accommodate the steady stream of fellow rally supporters.

Even when the situation got out of hand, many were unaware that tear gas had been fired with most of them leaving only because they were told the sit-in was over.

At press time, it was reported there were pockets of rally participants who remained defiant, staying on at night as the police swept the streets for stragglers.

Earlier, the mood at the various assembly points was lively and enthusiastic, as protesters enjoyed a carnival-like atmosphere punctuated by cheers and songs, giant balloons and yellow inflated “Angry Birds” decorated with the number 428 signifying the rally date.

From roving musicians to protesters clad in fancy dress costumes, there was much entertainment for the rally participants as they waited to start their march to Dataran Merdeka for their planned sit-in protest.

A man dressed as a yellow Power Ranger stood out in the crowd.

His outfit piqued the interest of those gathered at the Masjid Jamek LRT station and many lined up to pose for pictures with him.

The Red Crescent and St John Ambulance personnel who were stationed at various locations handed out bottled drinking water to those who participated in demonstration.

They also ferried those who were injured during the protest.
