Bersih sit-ins pass without incident
KUCHING: The Bersih 3.0 sit-ins here ended peacefuly and crowds dispersed at 4pm sharp while some hung out at coffee shops and cafes nearby to quench their thirst after being under the hot afternoon sun.
A large crowd of Bersih participants were seen at Kuching Old Court House, with the presence of about 100 policemen to maintain order.
The crowd started walking from Hilton Hotel here around 2pm, hoping to get the attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who was having a press conference at the hotel at the time.
The crowd then passed by the Kuching Waterfront and proceeded to the Old Court House, which was about 1km away.
Present among the crowd were DAP state secretary Chong Chieng Jen, DAP state treasurer Violet Yong, PKR state chairman Baru Bian, PKR Wanita chief Voon Shiak Ni and PKR information chief See Chee How.
Despite the massive traffic jam, no untoward incidents were reported. The same rally in Sibu also went by without incident at the Chuan Corridor here, which is part of the Town Square Phase One.
Sibu police chief ACP Shafie Ismail said about 100 policemen were deployed to ensure peace and order.
The crowd, comprising members of Pakatan Rakyat component parties DAP and PKR as well as several non-governmental organisations, gathered at 2.30pm.
Despite the scorching sun, they stayed until 4pm before dispersing.
Pelawan assemblyman David Wong said he was satisfied with the peaceful turnout.
Wong also urged all eligible citizens to register as voters and to participate in all future elections.
