Cops rescue abducted girl

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have rescued a nine-year-old girl who was abducted and confined in a house for several hours while she was waiting to go home from school.

The drama unfolded here Monday afternoon when M. Santhi, 47, realised that her daughter had not returned home as usual.

When she called the school van driver, she was shocked to learn that her daughter had been spotted in a woman's car. The woman had earlier gone to the girl's school compound to meet her.

Based on the description given by her driver, Santhi realised that the woman was known to her family. She then informed the police, which formed a special team to track the child.

Police located the girl in a house in Jelutong, then rushed inside to rescue her and detained the female suspect.

Santhi said Tuesday that the suspect had contacted her brother-in-law demanding RM24,850 to release the child.

"I believe that the suspect had held my daughter against her will due to a personal matter between us,” she added, without elaborating.

District Deputy OCPD Supt Baharudin Mustafa confirmed the case and subsequent arrest.

"We are checking if there are any other suspects linked to this illegal confinement case," adding that the case was being investigated under Section 363 of the Penal Code for illegal confinement.
