Boy drowns in swimming pool after sneaking out

GEORGE TOWN: An eight-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool after allegedly sneaking into an apartment complex near his home in Batu Uban here.

Muhammad Isma Dannel Abdul Rahman, a Year Two pupil at SK Minden Heights, was believed to have left his home, just a stone's throw from the apartment, at about 11am yesterday.

“He might have gone there to swim with his friends,” said the boy's granduncle Kader Sultan, 67.

“I was shocked when I received a call (about the incident) from a relative at about 1pm,” he said at the Penang Hospital mortuary.

Kader said the incident could have been avoided if the security guard on duty had kept an eye on those entering the apartment complex.

It is learnt that a resident had called an ambulance and the police but efforts to revive the boy failed.

The boy's parents were too distraught to speak to the media.

Muhammd Isma Dannel has a sister, aged six, and a two-year-old brother.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the case had been classified as sudden death.
