Recognition for 674 more varsities in China

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian students will have more options now as 674 more institutions of higher learning that offer degrees in China are recognised in Malaysia.
This brings the total number of such Chinese institutions to 820.
The news came yesterday, just three months after the first announcement by Deputy Higher Education Datuk Dr Hou Kok Chung in March that the Government had recognised academic qualifications of 146 institutions in China.
Dr Hou said this would mean that nearly all of the universities in China were recognised.
“It was based on the Malaysia-China Mutual Recognition Agreement inked on April 28 last year. We have submitted a list of 64 institutions for recognition by the Chinese government,” he said at Universiti Malaya (UM) after meeting He Guoqiang, a senior Chinese leader.
For professional programmes such as medicine, however, Dr Hou said approval should still be sought from the Malaysian Medical Council.
Meanwhile, Kong Zi Institute at Universiti Malaya (KZI-UM) received a boost for its Chinese language and culture programmes with the contribution of teaching tools from the Chinese government.
The Chinese leader said he was impressed with KZI’s development in Malaysia.
Student Zainatul Fadhilah Zulkarnain, 19, who recited a poem in Mandarin to welcome He, said she enjoyed learning the language.
“My ambition is to become a dentist, so the language will help me communicate with patients who speak Mandarin.”
Zainatul’s three siblings are also Chinese language learners.
