T’ganu govt allocates RM20mil for single mothers

KUALA TERENGGANU: Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said announced a RM20mil allocation by the Terengganu government from next year to elevate single mothers from poverty and help them become independent.

Ahmad said aid for single mothers was previously included in the funds for other groups under the Social Welfare Department.

"The RM20mil allocation will be included in the 2013 Budget this year. I request the Welfare, Women and Community Development Committee chairman Datuk Yahya Khatib Mohamad to draw up a programme for single mothers next year," he said.

He was speaking after the launch of the state level 'Karisma Selendang Biru Semarak Kasih' programme here Saturday, also attended by Women, Family and Community Development secretary-general Datuk Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nor.

"The RM20mil is specifically for the state's single mothers who now number 21,837. We'll assist them in various business fields," he added.

He said there were single mothers who were successful in business but some of them still needed help and others with no work who depended on monthly welfare assistance.

"There're still single mothers who only depend on the Social Welfare Department. So we'll help them in the fields they're interested in," he said. - Bernama
