Lawmakers to debate Lynas tomorrow
By MARTIN CARVALHO
PETALING JAYA: Lawmakers are expected to debate the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant project when the Lynas Parliament Select Committee tables its report in Parliament tomorrow.
Committee member Nancy Shukri said the report was expected to be tabled for debate tomorrow but declined to elaborate on its recommendations or when it would be distributed to lawmakers.
However, she said the committee's report contained some 30 findings and recommendations following public hearings on the project.
The committee held public hearings on Lynas in Kuantan on May 10 and 11, with the final session held in Parliament House on May 21.
Interest groups, medical experts and scientists from various fields presented their views to the committee during the hearings for it to make its findings and recommendations.
Last Friday, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said that Lynas (M) Sdn Bhd, operator of the controversial project in Gebeng, Pahang, would have to fulfil two additional requirements to the five licence conditions imposed by the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB).
The Temporary Operating Licence (TOL) shall only be issued by the board once Lynas has complied with all the conditions, including the two additional ones.
