Nine-vehicle pile up in Butterworth


BUTTERWORTH: A nine-vehicle pile up at the traffic light junction near the Seberang Jaya roundabout triggered a massive two-hour traffic jam along the stretch.

The accident was believed to be caused by a lorry's brake failure. The lorry was said to be coming from the south and heading towards the town when the accident happened at 10am.

The lorry driver was believed to have lost control of his vehicle before it rammed into the back of a sedan driven by a woman.

The woman fractured her leg and was rushed to the Seberang Jaya hospital. The accident also caused a van transporting food to overturn while an ambulance belonging to the Advance Dental and Medical Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) had both its front and rear sides dented.

Five other vehicles, including an SUV, were also damaged.

Traffic returned to normal at about noon.
