Stop debate on ethnicity and unite to face challenges, Dayaks told

KUCHING: The Dayaks have been told to be united in the face of new challenges at home and globally.

In giving this advice, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas said Dayaks should not be pre-occupied with their ethnicity while other communities were competing for opportunities created by the Government’s economic policies.

“The future has many new challenges for us. All over the world we can see economic and political crises happening.

“I think in Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak, there are a lot of other bigger issues to deal with. We Dayaks should see ourselves as just Dayaks.

“Put aside our political differences. Come together and find ways to solve problems because if we look at history we had done it in the past.

“ I’m sure we can do that again in the future,” he said during the SDNU Supreme Executive Committee Installation and Gawai gathering here on Saturday.

Uggah pointed out that Dayaks should use SDNU as a vehicle to address issues facing them regardless of their ethnicity, religion and political differences.

He said SDNU had a very important role to play in ensuring that they would not be left behind in development as the country moved towards Vision 2020 and a high income economy.

He also said that now that SDNU had appointed Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom as its new president, he was confident that with the new vision and mission set by Mawan, SDNU would be able to bring Dayaks to greater heights, provided that they united in their aims and objectives.

Uggah also pointed out that the Government had realised the urgency of helping the bumiputras of Sarawak and that a special Cabinet committee for the bumiputras of Sarawak and Sabah had been set up.

“The committee is chaired by none other than the prime minister to ensure decisions made by the committee and the delivery system will not frustrate the decision-making,” said Uggah.

Uggah later announced an allocation of RM30,000 for SDNU out of his MRP funds.
