SUNGAI PETANI: A bridal shop owner was found dead in a ditch here with a stab wound on her abdomen.

The body of M. Revathi, 23, who was earlier reported missing by her family, was spotted by passers-by near an oil palm estate in Persiaran Ambangan Height, which is about 250m from the Sungai Petani court complex.

Her uncle N. Subrayam, 53, who is the state People's Progressive Party (PPP) secretary, said Revathi's family lodged a police report after she failed to return home at about 2am yesterday.

“Revathi would usually be back home in Taman Ria at about 10.30pm after attending beautician classes in Taman Sejati,” he said.

Gathering evidence: State police forensic team members carrying out investigation at the scene where the body of Revathi (inset) was found near an oil palm plantation in Persiaran Ambangan Height in Sungai Petani.

When she did not come home on Tuesday night, he said her father M. Marimuthoo, 58, tried reaching her on her handphone but to no avail.

He said that Marimuthoo and Revathi's brother M. Dass Kumar, 34, then went to her class but found that it was already closed.

They searched for her in the area and also along the North-South Expressway near Sungai Petani.

Subrayam said at 8.15am yesterday, Revathi's father received a call from the police asking him to identify a woman's body which was found inside a ditch.

“I went to the location with Dass Kumar and we identified Revathi's motorcycle and her body which was clad in jeans and T-shirt,” he said.

Subrayam said Revathi, who was the third of four siblings, had only opened the bridal shop two months ago after finishing a beautician course in Kuala Lumpur.

Her parents and brother were too distraught to speak to reporters.

Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Hashim Ali confirmed the case.

“There was a stab wound on her body but we need to wait for the post-mortem report to establish the cause of her death,” he said.

He said police were not ruling out foul play in Revathi's death.
