JOHOR BARU: Police have decided to investigate the case of a five-year-old boy, who died after being left by his mother in her car for several hours, under the Child Act for negligence.

Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said although he was saddened by the case, the police had to act according to the law because a child had died.

“We will investigate under Section 31 of the Child Act for negligence. We have yet to record the mother's statement but we will try to complete the investigation papers as soon as possible,” he told reporters at the state police headquarters here yesterday.

He said police were still waiting for the post-mortem results.

Meanwhile, the boy was laid to rest at the Kangkar Tebrau Hindu cemetery here in a funeral attended by some 20 relatives.

The ceremony was briefly interrupted when a man, believed to be a family member, told reporters to leave the cemetery grounds and warned photographers against taking pictures of the funeral.

During the burial, a woman, believed to be the boy's mother, was seen weeping as relatives hugged her and offered condolences.

It was reported that the 40-year-old mother, who was working as a teacher in a school in Bandar Baru Uda, had accidentally left the child sleeping in the car at around 7.30am on Tuesday because she was rushing for work.

When she remembered the child at about 1.30pm and rushed to the car, the boy was already dead.
