Enforce WHO convention on tobacco control, says council

PETALING JAYA: The Government must show it is serious in controlling the tobacco trade by enforcing the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

Malaysian Council for Tobacco Control (MCTC) president Dr Molly Cheah said the international treaty, signed by Malaysia in 2003, contained the necessary provisions to reduce the supply of tobacco by combating illicit trade.

Price and tax measures as well as non-price measures are also contained in the FCTC’s provisions to reduce tobacco demand.

“All the Malaysian Government has to do is implement what it has committed to in the FCTC,” she said.
