No divorce for 278 couples after 2nd honeymoon programme

KUALA TERENGGANU: The troubled marriage of 278 couples did not end up in divorce after they went through the Second Honeymoon-Smart Start programme, organised by the Terengganu Family Development Foundation (YPK) since it started in 2009.

YPK director Mohd Shafaruddin Mustaffa said couples selected for the programme were those experiencing a critical marital crisis to the extent of applying for divorce in the Syariah Court.

"But after the three-day/two-night programme, most of the couples reconciled and are no longer facing serious marital problems," he told Bernama when met, here, on Monday.

According to statistics from Terengganu YPK, the highest divorce rates occurred among couples who were married for less than five years and 70 percent were due to the irresponsible attitude of the husband or wife and also interference from third parties.

A total of 1,315 divorce cases were recorded throughout Terengganu in 2010.

However, the number is still considered small compared to 11,000 to 14,000 marriages registered each year. - Bernama
