KOTA BARU: Two men brought the morning traffic to a crawl when they slugged it out in the middle of a busy street during protests by rival groups outside the Kota Darul Naim state government complex here.

Both ended with swells and bruises on their bodies as well as bleeding faces and heads in the fist fight that lasted about 10 minutes before a huge crowd of supporters from both groups in the 8.30am protests yesterday.

The fight stopped only when Kelantan People's Action Council (MTRK) president Che Azmi Mohd Ali pulled the two men apart.

Earlier, Che Azmi's group, said to be aligned to Umno, had gathered outside the building to protest against an alleged misappropriation of millions of ringgit by state-owned Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB).

At the same time, a group from Persatuan Anak Melayu Kelantan, said to be linked to PAS, demanded that the Federal Government restore oil royalty rights to the state.

The MTRK group tried to enter the government complex to hand over a protest note to Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat but was allegedly stopped by the other group.

By 10am, both sides had become rowdy and started throwing missiles of gas bombs and mineral bottles at each other.

In the midst of the chaos, the two men broke away from their respective groups and started trading blows.

On the sidelines, Kelantan Wira Perkasa chief Azman Yazid claimed he was attacked by a man in a red T-shirt while advising the rival group to move away from the MTRK crowd.

Kota Baru OCPD Asst Comm Azham Othman said the street fight was just a “small misunderstanding” between two men.
