Nalla challenges Anwar to raise the stake to RM100mil
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian United Indian Party (MUIP) president Senator Datuk S. Nallakarupan is challenging PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to sue him for RM100mil instead of RM50mil.
Nallakarupan said he wanted the defamation case instituted against him by Anwar, which was pending in court, to be settled before the 13th general election.
He added that it was crucial for the case to be settled before the elections so that people would know who the real Anwar is by the revelations made in court.
Nallakaruppan said Anwar's main dream was to become the prime minister.
“My evidence (against Anwar) has been submitted by my lawyer. We'll see when we go to court,” he told a press conference at the MUIP headquarters here yesterday.
On June 19, Nallakaruppan was found liable by the High Court of making defamatory statements against Anwar and was ordered to pay damages and costs to him.
In his lawsuit, Anwar said Nallakaruppan had caused the publication of defamatory articles in two Malay newspapers on Aug 23, 2008.
Anwar said Nallakaruppan uttered the defamatory statement against him during a ceramah in Permatang Pauh in August 2008.
In his lawsuit filed on Aug 25, 2008, Anwar sought RM50mil in compensatory damages and an injunction to stop the defendant from further defaming him.
Nallakaruppan said Anwar was currently on a suing spree because the election was approaching.
“He wants to shut people up from talking about his misconduct,” he added.
On the allegation that Anwar controlled 20 master accounts worth about RM3bil, Nallakarupan said he was certain that Anwar would point his fingers at Umno leaders.
He also questioned why Anwar had not instituted legal action against former Bank Negara assistant governor Datuk Abdul Murad Khalid, who made the allegation in a statutory declaration more than a decade ago.
Abdul Murad recently stated that he was prepared to cooperate with the authorities over the allegations.
