Najib sends new Egypt president his congratulations

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak congratulated the newly-elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi on his victory in the recent presidential election.

The Malaysian Prime Minister in his congratulatory message mentioned that Morsi’s triumph was a clear testimony of the confidence Egyptians had towards his leadership and political vision, said a Wisma Putra statement issued here yesterday.

“Malaysia welcomes the transformation process towards democracy currently taking place in Egypt and looks forward to working closely with Morsi in further strengthening the existing close relations between both countries,” said Najib.

Morsi was declared Egypt’s new president on Sunday after narrowly defeating contender Ahmed Shafiq by garnering 51.7% of the votes.

Morsi clinched 13,230,131 votes to Shafiq’s 12,347,380 votes. — Bernama
