DPM: Malaysians must uphold Bahasa Malaysia

By AMINUDDIN MOHSIN

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians have a responsibility to uphold the status of Bahasa Malaysia, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

"The use of BM as the primary medium of instruction in the education system will continue under the MBMMBI (upholding BM strengthening English) policy," he said.

He added that the policy would improve the fluency in both languages.

"Modern Malaysian culture must be based on education and the development of national literature and language," he said at launch of the Language, Literature and Culture in Education Seminar at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

"Civilisations are not measured by material success alone, refinement of character counts as well.

"The use of BM in education will help build unity, national identity and character. We want to see a developed nation that appreciates BM as the soul of the nation," said Muhyiddin who is also Education Minister.
