Anwar to testify in suit against Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will testify in his RM100mil defamation suit against Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

Anwar’s lawyer J. Leela said the PKR leader and a reporter would be called to give evidence in the trial.

Leela said High Court judge Justice Hue Siew Kheng set Nov 14 and 20 to hear the case.

“The judge has ordered the parties to file the summary of the case, lists of witnesses and issues to be tried,” Leela said after meeting the judge in chambers yesterday.

The judge fixed Aug 13 for case management of the civil action.

Khairy failed in his bid last year to strike out the suit against him and was ordered to pay RM7,000 in costs to Anwar.

In his lawsuit filed on March 7, 2008, Anwar claimed Khairy had uttered defamatory words and caused the posting on websites, including Malaysiakini.com, of a video clip entitled “Anwar and kin no threat”.

Khairy filed the striking-out application on Feb 21 on grounds that the suit was frivolous, vexatious and an abuse of the court process.

In his statement of defence filed on Oct 8 last year, Khairy said he relied on the defence of justification and qualified privilege.
