22 get Maybank help to study overseas

KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty two students received the first of its kind Maybank Foundation Overseas Scholarship Awards to pursue their studies at 36 selected universities.

“These students had passed through three main phases of a test that was conducted in order for them to meet the criteria, such as a minimum of 6A’s in SPM, an online test and a final interview with us as well,” said Maybank president and CEO Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar.

He said the Maybank scholarship programme was advertised through various platforms such as the online media and newspapers.

“I’m pleased that our scholarship programme is not only aligned to the human capital development needs of the Maybank Group but also to support the talent agenda of Malaysia,” he said yesterday.

The scholarship awards, worth RM13mil, were for pre-university entry level students. Maybank will provide full sponsorship to them until they complete their first degree at the foreign universities.

One of the recipients, Muhamad Hariz Ilmi Mahadi, is currently studying at the International Education College in Shah Alam.

He said he was looking forward to pursuing his studies abroad.

“I’m glad that this could ease the financial burden of my parents as well,” he said.

The Maybank scholarship programme was initiated in 1992. To date, over 1,000 students have benefited from it. There are now 95 students on scholarships, undergoing various levels of studies in which RM6.5mil is spent annually.
