NGOs protest over Unisel
BY TEH ENG HOCK
SHAH ALAM: Hundreds of people marched to the state secretariat and demanded the state government stopped politicising the management of Universiti Selangor (Unisel) and retain the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) field in Kelana Jaya as a recreational zone.
A group of nine non-governmental organisations (NGOs) gathered at Dataran Shah Alam and marched towards the state secretariat building to hand over a memorandum of their demands to Selangor MB Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
The group comprised NGOs such as Gerakan Anti-Penyelewengan Selangor (GAPS), Persatuan Bekas Veteran Malaysia, Waris Malaya, Gerakan Belia 4B Malaysia, Gerakan Masyarakat Prihatin India Selangor and Gerakan Prihatin Rakyat Selangor (GPRS).
Protest organiser Wan Indra Putra Ahmad said the memorandum demanded that Khalid stop interfering politically in Unisel's board of management and to retain the existing PKNS complex field as a recreational zone instead of changing its status for commercial development.
The memorandum, which was handed over to Khalid's private secretary Norzatun Aini, also alleged that the state education foundation Yayasan Selangor was involved in misappropriating public funds following losses of RM7.41mil in its recent audit report.
GPRS secretary Mohamad Zainal Khamis they have given Khalid a week to address these three issues.
"If Khalid fails to address our demands, we will bring in more people to protest," he added.
