MCA veteran Law Lai Heng dies at 77

JOHOR BARU: MCA veteran member and former Pontian MP Law Lai Heng (pic) has died.

Law, 77, was sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital at about 11pm on Saturday after he collapsed at a meeting and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Florence Teng Ngit Yoong, 68, said that despite her husband's advanced age, he continued to be active in the party.

“Lately, he had been busy organising meetings with the Johor Baru branch leaders in preparation for the general election,” she said at the wake at the Johor Baru Tiong Hua Federation memorial park yesterday.

Law was Pontian MP from 1986 to 1990.

Prior to that, he was Air Panas (now Tenang) assemblyman (1982) and also state exco chairman for Environment, Communications and Energy, Tanjung Puteri assemblyman (1978), Layang-Layang assemblyman (1974) and Johor Baru City councillor (1961 to 1966).

He was also the first Chinese political secretary for then Johor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Othman Saat in 1978.

He also held various posts in MCA, including Johor MCA deputy chief (1984 to 1986) and Johor MCA secretary from 1978 to 1984.

Barisan Nasional leaders described Law as a very dedicated man.

Former MCA president Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting said Law's dedication towards the party was unrivalled.

Johor Speaker Datuk Mohd Ali Hassan said that Law was a charismatic man who remained close to the rakyat even after his retirement.

His funeral will be held at the Tiong Hua Federation Crematorium here on Wednesday at noon.
